Teaching Math with Google Apps
Alice Keeler wrote the book on Teaching Math with Google Apps (literally!). Teaching math in the 21st century is different, it asks students to be critical thinkers, model their math, critique the reasoning of others, and to analyze. Many of the math problems we have traditionally been using have literally become obsolete as a result of modern technology. This is a gift! This session is an introduction to ways we can use Google Apps to make this shift.

Ditch that Homework
Students hate it. Parents wonder if it's worth the tears, frustration, and nightly arguments. Teachers debate whether it's really helpful or just busywork that consumes their precious time. One thing everyone can agree on is that homework is a contentious topic. In this session, Alice will discuss the pros and cons of homework, why teachers assign it, and what life could look like without it. You will also learn practical guidance on how to eliminate homework from your lessons. You'll discover strategies for improving learning through differentiation and student agency and by tapping into the way the brain works best.

Passionate Learners - How to Engage and Empower Your Students

Would you want to be a student in your own classroom? In this session, based on the book Passionate Learners: How to Engage and Empower Your Students, 7th-grade teacher Pernille Ripp will help both novices and seasoned educators create a positive, interactive learning environment where students drive their own academic achievement. You’ll discover how to make fundamental changes to your classroom so learning becomes an exciting challenge rather than a frustrating ordeal. Attendees will discover practical strategies for how to build a working relationship with your students based on mutual trust, respect, and appreciation, be attentive to your students’ needs and share ownership of the classroom with them, and break out of the vicious cycle of punishment and reward to control student behavior. Whether you are just beginning or well on your way in your teaching career, this session is meant to inspire you, help you take some risks, and eagerly pursue your journey toward a classroom filled with passionate learners.
