Gaming as a Learning Platform: Minecraft in the Classroom

Many parents and educators are well aware of the hold the game Minecraft has on their kids. Together we will explore the elements of this game, why it is so engaging, and how it is being used in schools with great success. Whether you want to understand it better as a parent and/or educator, or whether you’re considering integrating Minecraft in your classes, come demystify the game and score some geek cred with your kids. You will come away with resources and further reading and video content you will thoroughly enjoy.

What this session provides is an overview of many different ways Minecraft is being used in classrooms, covering every curricular area imaginable. We provide videos and links to more resources so teachers can visualize what a project or activity in Minecraft will actually look like. This work is supported by the research of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, James Gee, Jane McGonigal, Mimi Ito, and others who have written and shared a great deal about the value of games as a learning platform.

Presenters will describe the process for setting up a Makerspace at a school site and district wide. They will share resources and documents to help others get started setting up a Makerspace. Discussion will include choosing a space, selecting items for the Makerspace, budget, purchasing and the management of the space. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters and collect their contact information so that they can ask questions at a later date. We will explore ways in which G Suite tools (and more) can be used to foster critical thinking and civic engagement in the high school or middle school classroom. With an emphasis on the new Google Sites, take what you want from several classroom-piloted projects, including custom webquests, project based learning, and student created sites. While these activities were designed for a civics classroom, they can easily be adapted to other subject areas. Come enjoy some time to create your own lesson, site, or project and leave with tons of tech tools to use tomorrow!
